SHONEN KNIFE As punk as pink can be.
Naoko, Atsuko and Risa make the sugar rush for the stage as these gigantors of Japanese astropop punk fire up their quatro decade plus power packs and rocket to their best place… Australia 2024, when they will rocket around the country for a 9-date tour, marking the band’s sixth tour of the country since their first in 1997. Hey ho day glo!

Since their humble DIY beginnings in late 1981, Osaka, Japan’s Shonen Knife have been building a faithful following of rock enthusiasts and alternative rock elite, their relentless journey securing the band’s place as one of the pioneer ambassadors of Japanese rock music and culture on the international stage. The rock and roll dreams of three girls blossomed into a reality and the trio continues now into its 43rd year of international touring and recording with their 20th release Our Best Place released early ’23!

SHONEN KNIFE Our Best Place OUT NOW
on digital, CD and VINYL – VALVE/MGM

BEN ELY AND THE MUNGO FUNGO BAND‘s crazy time is comin’ your way… some psych rock radness is steppin’ from the phaser shimmers with the fully throned peak out that is “Zargon Oscillator Prose” – album out now via Valve/MGM.  Ben is more generally known for his work with the band REGURGITATOR over close to 30 years now as well as a myriad of projects over the years (Pangaea, Brokenhead, The Stalkers, Jump to Light Speed, Radio 5 etc), with the past years spent on a large amount of time writing and recording material for contemporary dance and theatre shows. He has also chanelled that energy into solo performances and three albums thus far – with the more recent THE GOLDEN PATH, previous release STRANGE TALES OF DRUGS & LOST LOVE and the debut release GOODBYE MACHINE.  Mungo Fungo is three friends connected deep in the stratosphere psyched up on a proton thrill. Get tuned and fully oscillate! Let your mind fry and just soak in the feels. Everything you hear on Zargon Occillator Prose comes out of a need to connect and create happy accidents which are the songs you will find on this record!  We hope you enjoy these little paintings we curated for the gallery that is you mind.

THE GLYCEREENS blend their dirty bubblegum aesthetics with garage punk rock tones to create a sonic fuzzed-out sound that is both energetic and super loud. Rising from the ashes of noisy garage heaven in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, the Glycereens are spreading their fuzzy love throughout the cosmos. With the previous album releases of ‘Hangin’ On’ in 2018, and ‘Atomic Army’ in 2021, the band is ready to release their third album of fuzzy-goodness ‘Glyco-Therapy’ in 2024.

CHIMERS are a two piece from the East Coast of Australia. Binx on Drums/ Padraic on Guitar, both share vocals. Chimers combine their love of noise pop, post punk and garage rock. A dynamic sound of discordant guitar, off beat drum lines and brash melodic vocals. Think equal parts Mission of Burma, Wipers & all things Dischord Records as direct influences.

ROCKET SCIENCE are four individuals who play trashy-psychedelic-garage-punk with new wave, no-wave art-punk enthusiasm. Since their first rehearsal in 1998, they have enjoyed playing together for nearly 25 years. It’s been a weird and varied experience for all. Still, this original line-up is a spectacular experience to behold. Each member of Rocket Science is diverse and unique. It is as unlikely as profound that the band exists at all. Rocket Science finds inspiration through observation and sound, and feel it is privilege and honour to play their first show of 2024 with the legendary Shonen Knife.

Perth’s TURNSTYLE ending 2023 with the release of their fifth album Citizens’ Handbook, a sold-out launch and a crushing weekend with Regurgitator, Turnstyle have shed the holiday spread to bring their svelte selves back to the stage in support of Japan’s greatest export (second only to Casio) – Shonen Knife! Nobody is truly refreshed after a break, but Turnstyle will have an arsenal of songs YOU WILL KNOW (so important these days) and a bunch of songs written this century YOU WILL WANT TO KNOW if you haven’t already. Turnstyle in 2024? They amaze even themselves…

GRUNGE BARBIE after years of individually fronting the acts Hussy, New Talk and Trolley, Shinead Ruby, Kiera Alice Owen and Germaine Jones came together as Grunge Barbie in 2019 and proceeded to take over line ups across Perth and Fremantle. Earning a series of incredible shows (including supports with Sleaford Mods and RVG), Grunge Barbie bend the parameters of grunge, punk and hip hop, weaving them together fearlessly. Three powerful women have turned the last couple of years into a blueprint for anyone who has ever had to crash and reboot. There’s darker energies within the trio, flirtations with noise-work and uncharted lyrical content that speaks to Ruby’s ability to question everything, even herself.

BLACK BUZZARD formed their chamber of liberation way  back in 2010 when they released their first album “ Wake The Dead” . The new incarnation features original members Dave “Spiff” Hopkins on guitar and vocals from legendary Sydney hardcore band “Hellmenn”, Brad Miller on bass and vocals from Perth’s guitar lords “M-16’s” , and new member Bart Molony from South West heavies “Scyatic” on drums. The Surf City trio’s music stems from living in the West down in the great Southern land ,and having a love of riding the coastal  sunset swells on the back of an electric buffalo ,playing heavy ,original, fuzzed out rock . Their intense passionate quest for tone and high energy live shows help these rock ‘n roll soldiers  to create a sonic freight train of sound! Currently in the studio recording another fresh album at Kingdom, soon to be released early this year.

SHONEN KNIFE (meaning “Boy Knife” in Japanese) is an all-female Japanese pop punk band formed in Osaka, in 1981.  Heavily influenced by 1960s girl groups, pop bands, The Beach Boys, and early punk rock bands, such as the Ramones, the trio crafts stripped-down songs with simplistic lyrics sung both in Japanese and English. They continue to be the most internationally recognized name in Japanese Rock, the indie darlings of hipsters and rock stars alike, thirty-three years since Naoko and the band began releasing albums of their joyous mixture of pop, punk, food and fantasy for the world to enjoy. Since their inception featuring Naoko’s sister Atsuko and their friend, bassist/vocalist Michie, through to their varied lineup changes featuring current drummer Risa, SK have maintained their rightful place in the ever changing indie rock scene. Despite their pop-oriented nature, the trio maintains a distinctly underground garage rock sound rooted in edgy instrumentation and D.I.Y. aesthetics, which over the course of their long career has earned them a solid, worldwide cult following and made avid fans out of seminal ’90s alternative rock bands such as Sonic Youth, Nirvana, and Redd Kross. The band has been credited with making “the international pop underground more international” by “opening it up to bands from Japan”. They have also performed as a Ramones tribute band under the name The Osaka Ramones and have recorded music for numerous films including the theme song to the popular “PowerPuff Girls” cartoon series. Shonen Knife has toured worldwide playing their unique brand of sugar-pop-rock touring in the US, Canada, UK, Europe, Japan, China, Australia, Thailand and thickening their rich syrup as a band with each and every release.

“This is amongst my all time favourite live shows. I can’t remember the last time a live band made me quite this fucking happy. Whatever happened tonight needs to be bottled as it would solve all the world’s problems, five stars is not enough to say just how much I enjoyed this show.” – www.thepunksite.com/reviews/shonen-knife-the-strangerz-live-at-the-night-day-cafe/

“There are few bands I’ve encountered that are as utterly joyful and life affirming, like their biggest influence [The Ramones] there are few gaps in the set, one track stops and they just launch into the next one, each one a slice of perfection that is even better live than it is in it’s studio form. Buzzcocksian guitar riffs pepper a set that takes from 60’s girl groups and the aforementioned NYC outfit with their own special undefinable ingredient, an innocence and joy that celebrates those small moments that make life worthwhile, they are incomparable. Influences aside they deliver a set that is just utter joy, each track is delivered with smiles from the stage and a look around the venue just shows utter happiness, no attitudes from band or crowd, everyone is just happy to be here.” Night And Day Cafe, Manchester, UK – 28th April 2023 www.thepunksite.com/reviews/shonen-knife-the-strangerz-live-at-the-night-day-cafe/
