4ZZZ – ZED50
A Market Day celebration of 50 years of 4ZZZ radio.

Fifty years of restless fringe dwelling, skirting the alternative peripheries. Brisbane’s iconic 4ZZZFM underground radio – a media voice of activated uniqueness… a gravitational mass of marginalised minds blazing with subcultural creativity and political criticality. A blooming undergrowth of creative independence fuelling the edgy identity of Brisbane from the patchwork mayhem of those wild market days through to the transmitted waves of boundless idiosyncratic character – enormous in presence and profound in essence. Come celebrate half a century of vital radio and the culture that emanates at ZED50 – Saturday 25 October at Roma St Parklands – a core event as part of 4ZZZ 50th anniversary (see the full AUG 8 – DEC 8 program link below).

A wonderful, wide menagerie of musical denizens have passed through the broadcast vaults of 4ZZZ radio, some clambering their way up the annual Hot100… and many traversing those much loved Market Day events – to syphon this down to a representative lot took some effort and debate. After much deliberation, a line-up assembled into collective agreement with the top lining historical tandem of Briz rock pioneers, and international break out sensations THE SAINTS ’73-’78 – back for another grand blast after their sold-out Princess shows late ‘24. We know our product!

“Ed Kuepper is a motherfucker of a guitar-player, his sound just as molten and unrelenting as back in the day”. – UNCUT

Soldering the wrought iron energy into a unified state par excellence is a local swag of richness with a smattering of interstate visitors… Brisbane’s freewheeling genre crunchers REGURGITATOR; warp minding trash pop experimenters TROPICAL FUCK STORM; the driving tempo thunder of high rising FULL FLOWER MOON BAND; the raging politic of Brigg’s hot off the press powered-up BIG NOTER; the punk funked gristle and hamming it up of BUTTERFINGERS; the raw impatient scorch and melody of the long lived SCREAMFEEDER; the crunchy, swirling, psych poppin’ colour of NICE BISCUIT; the jazz butchered mayhem of the dynamo duo that is PARTY DOZEN; the neo-soul punk activism of first nations DANCINGWATER; the endearing fuck-you top of the hundred, fruity punk of FLANGIPANIS; the out of the window, queer as folk, rock pulp of PLATONIC SEX; and the many minds that make rock future light work of VELOCIRAPTOR. Two stages of market day mania.

C’mon Brisbane, you got clout… let’s rise to what 4ZZZ community radio is, was, and will be… and a make full day at the parklands of it!

4ZZZ TURNS 50: CELEBRATING HALF A CENTURY OF RADICAL VOICES & REAL COMMUNITY RADIO BRISBANE, QLD – It all began as the bold, student-led community radio station housed at the University of Queensland back in 1975. Now, 4ZZZ still stands as one of the most enduring voices in Australian media – playing a major role in shaping the music, cultural and political scene of this city and beyond since the very start. This year, join Brisbane’s own 4ZZZ as we celebrate 50 years of broadcasting boundary-pushing music, news, culture and activism!

Since its beginnings at the University of Queensland, 4ZZZ has been a thriving hub of activists, artists, musicians, and journalists; everything from weird and wonderful creatives to frontline advocators of political and social change. Born out of resistance in the  hyper-conservative era of Bjelke-Petersen, you could tune in to 4ZZZ to hear voices you wouldn’t hear anywhere else. The driving force behind the station’s inception were disenfranchised young people taking action and forming an alternative where their voices could be heard. We’ve been your soundtrack to protest rallies, late-night adventures, underground gigs and social revolutions.

REGURGITATOR
Forming late ‘93 in Brisbane, core members Quan Yeomans and Ben Ely set off on a malformed trajectory of numerous EPs and albums recorded in idiosyncratic scenarios. 30 plus years. 10 albums and rising. Pop goes the culture! Like a stun to the head… it leaves one careering across the highway of a neverending invasion of cultural detritus… strewn across the landscape of your mind with blips and beeps and repetitive phases. Latest expedition to the peak mountain of sounds – 2024 heard the invasive notions of INVADER. In the spirit of creative reflection – scale high, question anything, and arise with some kind of knowing.

With a new found vigor and a swag of new material, Butterfingers are officially back in the saddle and continuing to bend genresand the boundaries of good taste with a rare blend of obscenity, wit & charm. From early in their career they built a reputation on their energetic & eclectic live shows that crossed genres and blurred boundaries drawing from Hip Hop, Punk, Reggae, Drum & Bass, Stoner Rock, Electronica and just about anything that makes you want to shake your bones, into a cohesive mash-up all of their own creation.

SCREAMFEEDER
Screamfeeder are the band you grew up with, whose songs are imprinted into the DNA of every music-lover who came of age in the ‘90s and ‘00s. A band of eternally-youthful fuzz-pop darlings who have continued to play together for 30 years and somehow have not only gotten better, but have become even more loved. A band that combines loud with beautiful, intense with joyous, chaotic with precise and pulls it all together in a way that very few acts ever manage.

PARTY DOZEN
Sydney’s Party Dozen (saxophonist Kirsty Tickle and percussionist Jonathan Boulet) are back with a new album Crime In Australia, the follow-up to 2022’s The Real Work, an international breakthrough for the group. Tracks such as the Nick Cave-featuring “Macca The Mutt”, and the radio-friendly skronk of “Fruits Of Labour” won fans far and wide, enabling the group to take their wild and intense live show across four continents. As with its predecessor, Crime In Australia was written, recorded, produced and mixed by the duo themselves in their studio in Marrickville, Sydney Across ten tracks Crime In Australia shows a group absolutely unafraid to explore their “many dumb ideas” and as a result going places that are thrilling, visceral, face-melting, surprisingly danceable and frequently ridiculous, often all at the same time.

FLANGIPANIS
Flangipanis are a party punk Brisbane 4 piece renowned for their cheeky and melodic fuck-you anthems. The band has toured nationally for close to two decades and developed into a stalwart of the Australian independent punkrock scene. After 9 studio releases, the sound has solidified into their now-identifiable style – loud, honest and openhearted.  These larrikins love a drink and a laugh as much as they love to play, and that spirit radiates through their content and live shows. If you’re wondering how a fuck-you can be endearing, chuck on a Flangipanis record.

PLATONIC SEX
Hills Hoist arm groans at the prod of summer breeze. Powerlines stretch across peach and lilac sunsets. Within the natural poetry of Queensland, Platonic Sex has crafted a singular garage rock soundtrack to growing up. Contemporary Brisbane/Magandjin cult favourites, Platties have played alongside the likes of Angel Olsen, Yard Act, The Beths, TOPS, Jen Cloher, WAAX and Body Type. 2024 saw them head to the UK for a string of tour dates including Brighton’s The Great Escape. Beginning 2025 as Best Rock Song finalists at the Queensland Music Awards, they embarked on an all-ages weekender which saw them play the inaugural She Can Rage party in Sydney, and a sell-out DIY headliner in Brisbane, collaborating with Anti Dismal. And ICYMI – they were name-dropped as a band you need to know about during the national TV broadcast of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade.

VELOCIRAPTOR
Brisbane garage rock ensemble Velociraptor first appeared on the local scene as a trio in 2008, but with two of those members quickly finding fame with side-project DZ Deathrays the line-up quickly expanded exponentially by necessity to cover their frequent absences. In their halcyon days Velociraptor were a force to be reckoned with, an amorphous collective sometimes up to 12 members strong – many of them wielding axes of some description – who attacked their live performances like they did their rider, with unbridled glee and genuine gusto. They toured Europe and the UK, as well as sharing stages with bands the calibre of Black Lips, New York Dolls, OFF!, Radio Birdman and Violent Soho. They’ve now streamlined the line-up to a lazy 10 members, and have returned to the fray with new album Computer Future – released via Coolin’ By Sound/Redeye Worldwide in late-2024 – which is the best distillation of their hook-laden garage rock aesthetic yet!
