Introducing the gusts of Custard… including their inaugural Spring collection of live tunes!

From the gritty heart of their recent tropical sojourn to the northern quarters of Queensland in May this year… comes a transcontinental flight with contiguous dates running east to west across these sweeping plains. Blowing through your town one more time.

And now with eventual special guest announcement for these impending shows… in Melbourne is none other than supposed TISM acolyte DAMIAN COWELL’S DISCO MACHINE along with THE NEW DREGS; in Castlemaine comes SCHOOL DAMAGE and WORLD TURTLE WORLD. Then the following weekend in Adelaide is GHYTI and TANYA FROM HR; and in Perth THE COMMUNITY CHEST along with SLIEM FOX. Info and links below on all.

In other exciting news, Custard are set to unveil their inaugural LIVE album. Recorded on a steamy November night, ‘The Band, Live in the Basement’ captures the group tearing through a career-spanning set of pop gems, in front of a packed room at the storied (and sadly defunct) Sydney nightspot.

The album will be released on Friday 31 August, on all digital services.

Custard formed in Brisbane in 1990 and spent a decade recording albums and touring the world. Classics such as “Apartment”, “Music is Crap”, “Schtum” and “Girls Like That (Don’t go for guys like us)” literally fell from their fingertips. They split up in 1999, no one seems to remember the reason why. After waiting the obligatory ten years or so, they returned to the studio in 2015 to bash out the album “Come Back All Is Forgiven”. People liked it just enough for Custard to do another album, 2017’s “The Common Touch”.

Now, here we are, it’s 2018 and Custard are playing some more shows.

They possibly won’t play any other shows for a while. Make of that what you will.

Get out of the house… and go for the ride!

DAMIAN COWELL’S DISCO MACHINE feat. Tony Martin

Damian Cowell – the voice of TISM – and his Disco Machine friends are joined by 2018 best Australian comedy podcast-winner, #1 Australian radio comedian of all-time and all-round icon Tony Martin in an extravaganza of party music, rapier wit, silly dancing and multi-visual karaoke madness. It’s a stadium-sized aerobic workout as the Disco Machine mashes up Village People, Radiohead, S Club 7, Sex Pistols, Kylie – even a little TISM – and heaps more, plus highlights from their latest album ‘Get Yer Dag On!’ which The Guardian described as “a triumph” with songs that are “impossible not to quote in their entirety”. Besides: anything that involves Tony Martin doing the Nutbush just has to be seen. www.damiancowell.com

THE NEW DREGS

Having recently celebrated the coming release of their first EP ‘Anteroom’ The New Dregs offer a gritty, dark take on rock with unhinging melodies and crunchy abrasive guitar lines. Much like Muttniks brave first voyage into space The New Dregs are confronting, captivating and undeniably unethical. https://thenewdregs.bandcamp.com/releases

SCHOOL DAMAGE

Melbourne quartet School Damage make simultaneously sharp and wobbly DIY pop, taking in the bite of Devo, the wooziness of Young Marble Giants and the busy melodies of the Television Personalities. New album A To X (released 31 Aug 2018) comes hot on the heels of School Damage’s instantly loveable 2017 self-titled debut, which earned the band raves from Brooklyn Vegan, Noisey and BBC6 among others. Formed as a bedroom pop project for Carolyn Hawkins (Chook Race, Parsnip) and Jake Robertson (Ausmuteants, Hiero- phants, Frowning Clouds), School Damage now include Jeff Raty on drums and Dani Damage on bass. They have released cassettes and 7”s on various labels, including a recent single for UK label Upset The Rhythm. https://www.facebook.com/schooldamagerockers

WORLD TURTLE WORLD

World Turtle World have incarnated into human form and settled on Earth in the rural town of Castlemaine. They originally worked on a project to set up an ayahuasca retreat for misguided humans intent on destroying the planet for monetary gain. During breaks from this work, they formed a band. Their sound? Dynamic Synthesizer Rock. They take listeners through a sonic odyssey; weaving lyrical themes of esoteric poetry with the absurd, leaving audience and band members alike wondering which is which. The band’s lead Theremin player describes the music as “being profoundly shaped by our singer’s obsession with buying and collecting analogue synthesizers…profoundly”. The groups drummer states, “Most of our early music was written telepathically while the band was on silent meditation retreats. It’s difficult, and potentially illegal, to download music from the fourth dimension onto reel to reel”. Catch the next World Turtle World show here on Earth before they ascend into the higher realms.

GHYTI

Adelaide indie favourites Ghyti have stolen the quirkiest sounds of Britpop, post-punk and art-rock and combined them into a catchy mix that has seen them share stages with Regurgitator, Custard, The Mavis’s, EVEN, Jeremy Neale and Tiny Little Houses. The band is back home following a string of shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra supporting their new EP, ‘Race to the Bottom’. https://ghyti.bandcamp.com/

TANYA FROM HR

Bring your stickie notes, workplace conflicts and human capital, it’s Tanya From HR! Featuring members formerly of The Aves and The Honey Pies, Adelaide’s newest band, Tanya from HR, play jangly garage pop and make pleasant conversation, all in the name of fun and Human Resources. https://www.instagram.com/tanyafromhr

THE COMMUNITY CHEST

The Community Chest’s first release was 2013’s “Top Of The Hour”. Now sold out of it’s pressing, it is full of hooks and twists, drawing musical influences from the murky past to the shiny present. What followed was an extraordinary run of gigs including supports for Sebadoh, Shonen Knife, Za!, veruca Salt, They Might Be Giants, Ratatat, and local festivals WAM and In The Pines. They squeezed out a futuristic folk EP called “Make your decision now and live with it forever” in late 2015. Mixed in London by Stereolab producer Paul Tipler – a move towards an off the cuff, improvised approach and a penchant for danceable komische rhythms. The Community Chest are well into recording their third release which features the already released string synth spectacle Whim of the Wind and a fresh new track ‘Mobilise’, a 2 minute pocket anthem, the band back-flipping from 5 minute jams to catering for 21st century attention spans. www.thecommunitychest.bandcamp.com
